3 Ways to Boost Fertility Naturally

Hey Beauty, I’m a Holistic Nutritionist and I wanted to share some of the most effective ways you can boost your fertility naturally.

Tip # 1 to Boost Fertility Naturally: Get Off Bad Oils and Increase Good Ones

Get off poor quality fish oils – STAT. If you’re buying a cheap fish oil, it’s from unhealthy fish which leads to an unhealthy YOU.

I’ve had a lot of women who have come to see me who have heard that fish oils are good for fertility. The problem is, poor quality oils mean high risk of heavy metals, and when you’re trying to conceive or working through a pre-conception cleanse, it’s really important to keep toxic stuff like that OUT of your life.

The lower down the food chain you go, the less risk of contamination by these things. So as a best option, swap to a seaweed-based oil that gives you the same fats. Nutri-Vege is my favourite, and Flora brand makes a Flax Oil + DHA that is also really great.

Tip # 2 to Boost Fertility Naturally: Balance Your Hormones

This is a massive topic and it’s SO important to delve into.

The two biggest hormonal imbalances I see in relation to fertility is a thyroid imbalance, or an adrenal (stress) imbalance. Frequently, because hormones work together in your body, both are a little off.

I work by getting to the root cause, so while there are herbs that directly impact your fertility hormones (like vitex or maca powder), if your hormonal imbalances are stemming from a thyroid that’s out of whack or adrenal health that needs help, then you’ll be fighting an uphill battle by band-aid fixing your fertility with those herbs instead of whole body healing (supporting your body and what’s gone astray over time, so that it rebuilds your fertility forever).

Here are a few ways to know if your thyroid health is likely the key to your fertility:

  • if your body feels heavy often, regardless of your weight
  • if you have a heavy-feeling exhaustion
  • if you have a really hard time waking up in the morning
  • if you never feel refreshed in the morning, no matter how much you’ve slept
  • if you’ve lost hair either from your head or the outer third of your eyebrows
  • or if you HATE the cold with a stronger dislike than most other people (you almost feel allergic to it)

And if you have imbalanced stress hormones, which can impact your ability to conceive, this is how you’ll feel:

  • you crave sugar a lot
  • late at night, you crave LOTS of salty foods
  • sometimes you feel super wired even though you’re tired
  • you wake up in the middle of the night ‘for no reason’
  • you get head rushes when you stand
  • your blood pressure is often, or always, low
  • you’re easily startled by unexpected noises (and it’s a BIG startle)
  • and you perspire easily, or too much

The bright side of hormonal imbalances is that they respond really well (heal) with food changes, supplements and easy lifestyle switches.

Whenever you’re looking at healing your hormones, it’s important to get the help of a great, natural practitioner (because some symptoms can mimic others, and there are so many possible strategies that *can* help, that you want to find the most effective ones for you instead of guessing).

When I’m one-on-one with you (over Skype, the phone or Facebook chat) in a program, I can also advise on things your partner can do based on their health, so that you work together as a team to improve fertility.

Tip # 3 to Boost Fertility Naturally: Eat Frequently

One of the best ways to balance your stress hormones, which are SO key to amazingly effortless fertility, is to eat frequent and choose incredibly nutrient-dense and complex carbohydrate-rich foods.

Eating lentils frequently (try these amazing lentil patties – everyone LOVES them), whole food granola bars (try this awesome recipe from one of my major recipe-crushes, Angela from Oh She Glows) and bean-focused meals (here’s my very own adrenal-healing chickpea salad recipe) will help your stress levels out in a way you’ll hardly believe (but you will because you’ll feel so good).

But don’t just occasionally eat good meals, make them often and eat them often! Challenge yourself to eat every 3 hours and choose amazing, nutrient-dense foods each time.

You’ll notice an incredible boost in how you feel. And since this is one of the most basic-but-essential steps to amazing hormone balance, you’ll also start to see some changes in your body that will tell you you’re on the right track; an improving libido, a cycle that’s balancing back out or becoming more regular, acne that’s disappearing, weight that’s being lost without trying and more…

Bonus Tip for Men to Boost Fertility Naturally: Fire Up Your Zinc-Rich Foods

The tips above apply to men and women alike, but something specific to men is zinc, which provides the fuel for sperm to swim.

Taking a great, whole food zinc supplement can be helpful, and taking it apart from any other minerals or multi-vitamins is best. Zinc picolinate, if you’re not getting a whole food version, is a well absorbed form of zinc.

It’s not recommended to take more than 100 mg of supplemental zinc long-term.

If you’d prefer to eat LOTS of zinc-rich foods to get your zinc in, instead of taking a capsule, here are a few great sources of zinc: oysters (get organic), lamb (again, organic is essential), pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, lentils and chickpeas.
